Niki Lauda – BMW Alpina 2800 CS #10 – Spa 24 Hours 1971

A wonderful period view of the busy pit and paddock scene at the 1971 Spa 24 Hours, held at the original high-speed Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.Dominating the centre of the photograph is the BMW Alpina 2800 CS #10, driven by Niki Lauda and Gérard Larrousse. The Alpina BMW qualified an excellent second on the grid with a time of 4:09.9, before retiring from the 24-hour race with gearbox trouble.The photograph captures the wonderful atmosphere of international touring-car racing in the early 1970s, with mechanics, drivers and team personnel crowding the pit area. Particularly striking are the distinctive Dunlop advertising figures positioned in front of the cars, together with the period Varta, Mercedes-Benz, BP and Castrol signage lining the pits.
